Tornado

In 1990, a trust was formed known as the 'A1 Steam Locomotive Trust', which is to build a brand new 50th member of the Peppercorn A1 fleet. The locomotive was named 'Tornado' in honour of the RAF Tornado air crews in the Gulf War, as the locomotive was being built during the Gulf War. Originally the locomotive was to be steaming in 1998, the 30th anniversary when steam ended on its course on British Railways and the 40th anniversary of the first A1 roll out. However things got in the way and Tornado was finished on August 2008, the first steam locomotive to be created in Britain since 'Evening Star' in 1960 in Swindon. The locomotive did several trails on the Great Central Railway and on the mainline and was debuted in its Peppercorn green livery in December that year at the National Railway Museum, York, which was on display until early 2009. The locomotive made its public run on Jan.30th, 2009 and since then had conducted many rail tours around the United Kingdom and had a race with a Jaguar XK1 and the Black Shadow motorbike on Top Gear with Jeremy Clarkson on the footplate.

You can still see Tornado today on the main line. Between 2011-2012 it was in Brunswick Green and between 2012-2014 it was in BR blue livery. Currently in the works now and will be painted back in its Peppercorn green livery that it wore between 2008-2010.
